By JT Long on May 28, 2010

Social Media isn’t just for following Ashton Kutcher any more. A panel of innovation experts gathered at the Sacramento Marriott in Rancho Cordova on May 27 for a TechCoire panel on Driving Product Innovation Through Open Platforms & Social Media.

The phenomenon known as New Product Development 2.0 or NPD 2.0 to those in the biz, has become popular with companies large and small as the fastest way to generate ideas, gather feedback from real users and learn about competitors.

FLC Placerville Campus Introduces Liquid Greenforce

By JT Long on May 26, 2010

Students at Folsom Lake College’s El Dorado Center in Placerville now have access to new training for what the U.S. Department of Labor calls an “excellent” job opportunity field – water/wastewater treatment.

Last year, the Los Rios Community College District received a $2 million federal job-training grant to develop the next generation of clean tech workers. The resulting Greenforce Initiative funds classes such as Clean Diesel Technology, Solar Systems Design, Commercial Energy Auditing and Sustainable Landscape to the Los Rios Campuses. As part of this program, Folsom Lake College will be offering five classes in the fall of 2010 ranging from Wastewater Collection Systems Operation and Maintenance to Science for Water Operators.

Regatta Month at Lake Natoma Floats Local Businesses

By Jennifer Sander on May 10, 2010

Lake Natoma is dotted with boats on a daily basis, but never so busy as it is during the annual Regatta Month. For many of the businesses closest to the Sacramento State Aquatic Center, the annual month long event is a financial watershed.

Izzy Brookshire from the Aquatic Center points out that, while the college events bring substantial groups of teams from all over the nation, high school championship events bring even bigger crowds to the area. “Kids always travel with a family group that wants to see them race, mom and dad and the siblings and grandparents.” High school teams come from all over the state to participate in those events, and the college level races draw participants from all around the country.

Health Net Awarded TRICARE Contract After Protest

By Annie Lowe on May 7, 2010

After protesting the U.S. Department of Defense’s decision to Award Aetna with the lucrative TRICARE health care contract, Health Net announced today that the Department of Defense now intends on awarding it to Health Net.

Health Net has held the TRICARE North Region contract for 22 years, and the loss of the contract last July resulted in downgraded stock and talk of layoffs at the company’s TRICARE office at its Rancho Cordova location. A protest to the Government Accountability Office filed soon after the award announcement was sustained in November, but no guarantees were made that the accepted protest would result in Health Net maintaining the contract.
