Sofia Leones Tsakopoulos was one of five women honored May 6 at the Fair Oaks-based St. John’s Shelter for Women & Children Mother’s Day Tea Party.
Tsakopoulus is married to Angelo K. Tsakopoulos. Founder of AKT Development Corp., the mega-real estate development company headquartered on College Town Dr. in the Power Inn area. Together the Tsakopouloses have six children and six grandchildren and support charities throughout the Sacramento region.
Also honored were Judy Tartt-Baloney, fund development chair for the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Sacramento Chapter; Sarah Krevans, president of Sutter Health Sacramento Sierra Region; Elaine Wright, board member, Cosumnes Community Services District; and Rebecca Hahn, a St. John’s Alumna. Hahn was a recovering drug and alcohol addict when she reached out to St. John’s in 2006 on the brink of eviction. She now attends American River College with plant to transfer to Sacramento state in the spring. She will soon finish her internship as an Alcohol and other Drug Counselor with the Effort and is a proud mother to two sons, Christopher, 11, and Kenneth, 23.
St. John’s is the only shelter in Sacramento County focused exclusively on homeless women with children. On any given day, over 100 of the community’s most vulnerable turn to St. John’s for a place to stay, food, training and emotional support.
Last year, St. John’s operated a groundbreaking winter shelter at Mather Community Campus that offered studio-style bungalows to families waiting for permanent housing.
St. John’s also launched a new On the Job Training program at the Army Depot called Through Better Tomorrows Café and Catering. Graduates train in three of twelve disciplines over a year on the way to sustainable employment.
The annual Tea and auction was designed to raise funds for continued operation in the face of declining government support. High Tea sponsors were AT&T, Bank of America, Chevron and Sacramento Business Journal.
